For over 25 years, IJswater Films has been dedicated to producing high-quality Dutch films, documentaries, and television dramas. We are committed to supporting innovative and artistic projects that have a lasting impact within the Dutch film industry.

 

IJswater Films, founded in 1999, has built a rich history under the leadership of producer Marc Bary. During this time, we have curated a diverse portfolio of award-winning and acclaimed productions that have received recognition both nationally and internationally.

The projects of IJswater Films

After THE POLISH BRIDE (2 Golden Calves, Cannes Critics' Choice, Golden Globe Nomination), a series of successful feature films followed, including THE 14TH CHICKEN, the debut of Hany Abu-Assad and Arnon Grunberg (Opening Film NFF), DEEP by Simone van Dusseldorp (Golden Calf Nomination Best Actress Melody Klaver, Best Director/Actress Geneva IFF), LOTUS by Pascale Simons with a screenplay by Philip Delmaar (Golden Calf Nomination Best Actor), SUPERNOVA by and with Tamar van den Dop (Berlinale Generation), 22nd OF MAY by Koen Mortier (TIFF), PARADISE TRIPS by Raf Reyntjens (Winner of 3 Ensors), AM I CRAZY by Frank Lammers (2 Golden Calf Nominations), IN BLUE by Jaap van Heusden (Golden Calves 2018 for Best Director, Screenplay, and Actress Maria Kraakman, Opening Film Film by the Sea), and the Spanish-language feature debut of Isabel Lamberti, LAST SPRING (Winner New Directors Award San Sebastian, Nomination Cannes ACID, Winner Les Arcs FF Acting Award), THE MAN FROM ROME (Winner Golden Calf Best Music, 3 Golden Calf Nominations, Best Feature Film Limburg Film Festival) by Jaap van Heusden in a majority co-production with the German Fiction Park and EO (Benelux distributor Gust Ent, Germany: Missing Films) and released in Spain: KILLING CRABS / MATAR CANGREJOS by Omar Al Abdul Razzak (distribution Spain & world sales Filmax, Winner Malaga FF and Las Palmas FF 2023).

IJswater has developed and realized several selected TV films:

SKIN by Hanro Smitsman (Winner Golden Calf Best Actor/Emmy Nomination Robert de Hoog, theatrical release), WIN/WIN by Jaap van Heusden (selection of 40 festivals, Winner Best Actor Brooklyn FF, Prix Europa Geneva Script Award, theatrical release), THE NEW WORLD by Jaap van Heusden (Winner Intl. Emmy Award Best Actress Bianca Krijgsman, selection of 50 film & TV festivals), THE HEART OF HADIAH TROMP by Erik de Bruyn (Winner Best Foreign Film Honolulu Film Awards, Silver Award Best Actress Chloé Leenheer, Bronze Award Best Feature Film Queen Palm IFF Palm Springs), and the youth TV film UNTIL SUNDOWN (Albert Jan van Rees) and recently PARIA by Edson da Conceicao.

IJswater produces drama series, such as for One Night Stand ANVERS (Winner FIPA D’or, Golden Calf Best TV Drama), ENTRE NOSOTROS (Winner FIPA D’Argent), and FREE FIGHT (2 Golden Calf Nominations 2018).

For youth, including;

ABI (Beeld & Geluid Award Best Youth Drama), THE MOON OF ANOUAR (Winner Toronto Kids TIFF Jury Prize), KI (Winner Best Film Boston Kids FF), EVI & CO (Winner Best Series Chicago Children’s FF), and KABAM! (Winner International Emmy Award for Kids Live Action 2022, Best Dutch TV series Cinekid 2021), with a second series in development.

More than 50 short films have been made, including Golden Bear Winner RAAK, Golden Calf 2018 Winner L’ÉTÉ ET TOUT LE RESTE, Crystal Bear 2022 Winner FLAWLESS, CHECK-OUT TIME (Audience Award Southern Film Festival 2023), and MAGMA (selection Berlinale Generation K-Plus 2023, winner CineKid AMARTE Best Dutch Short Live Action Award).

Also documentaries, including ARTEK THE IDEAL HOLIDAY CAMP and tele-doc ADELBORSTEN by Walter Stokman, mid-length NEST STAYERS by Juul Bovenberg, theatrical documentary BRIDGING THE GAP by Corinne van Egeraat (IDFA), mid-length documentary DUNYA by Tim Bary (debut competition NFF 2021) and the Teledoc Campuses YOU HAVE A PROBLEM, FATHER (Locarno FF 2019, Golden Calf Nomination 2019) and LUC by Tim Bary and Teledoc Campus THE NIGHT OF YOUR LIFE by director Fleur Bax in co-production with EOdocs.

Currently in production:

PROJECT HERBERT, a TV film by Barbara Bredero (screenplay Pink Robin Stories), and the documentary LUCAS by Tim Bary, both in co-production with the Dutch Public Broadcasting, supported by the NL Film Fund and CoBO.

New projects in development include those supported by the Dutch Film Fund:

Canadian co-production – IN ALASKA by Jaap van Heusden (selection Cannes L’Atelier, TIFF Ontario Creates IFF 2019), LOST SON (director Edson da Conceicao, screenplay Philip Delmaar), IMPRISONED (director Ben Sombogaart, screenplay Chris Westendorp), JUST NICK (youth film, director Nicole van Kilsdonk, screenplay Jeanine Cronie), CHARLIE, THE TREE GIRL (director Sanne Vogel, screenplay Lineke van den Boezem & Matthijs van Wensveen), THE WONDEROUS JOURNEY OF LITTLE SOPHIE animated film in co-production with Pellicola, ROT (formerly THE APOSTATES, by Malu Janssen), and ANTON DE KOM – I WILL BE HEARD (co-production Tulsa Studios, screenplay Philip Delmaar & Raoul de Jong, director Edson da Conceicao).
